Honored as Top Trainers by Crane & Rigging Hot Line during the May General Assembly of the Association of Crane & Rigging Professionals (ACRP) were William “Hank” Dutton, and Angelo Alverio. During the Nashville meeting, Dutton, senior technical specialist for Travelers Insurance Co., Hartford, Conn., was named the 2013 Top Trainer in the Corporate Category, and Alverio, senior instructor/inspector for Crane Inspection & Certification Bureau, Orlando, Fla., the 2013 Top Trainer in the Professional Category.
Endorsed by ACRP, the award program recognizes trainers in two categories. Corporate trainers are represented by crane manufacturers, rigging suppliers, service providers, and general contractors and specialists in crane rental, rigging, and machinery moving. Professional trainers primarily work for a training company.
“Crane and rigging trainers are integral to our entire way of life. Everything we as a society have is in some way made possible because a crane operator did their job successfully,” Guy Ramsey, group director for MCM Group LLC, publisher of Crane & Rigging Hot Line, said in making the presentations. “The factories that make our cars, produce our food, our water, building materials, everything comes from plants or structures erected buy a crane. Operators and riggers can only be successful through the efforts of those that provide them proper training. While trainers get satisfaction from their efforts to help operators and riggers make it safely home each night, it is good to recognize their accomplishments.”
Nominated by their peers, coworkers, and students, Dutton and Alverio were presented with engraved commemorative trophies and scholarships made possible through funding provided by Top Trainer Sponsors. This year, sponsors included ITI (Platinum Professional), Terex Cranes (Silver) and American International Crane Bureau (Bronze).
Scholarships may be used by the recipient to further their own or a student’s education. Both Top Trainers said they plan to donate their scholarships so that someone coming up through the crane and rigging industry can further his or her instruction.
Alverio said he is most proud of what this title as Top Trainer means for the greater good of Hispanic crane operators and riggers. “It means the world to me, and being able to take the Hispanic community to a new level, bring them certification and adequate training, is huge,” said Alverio, who believes no matter where a person is in his or her career, it’s never too late to gain knowledge. “You’re never too old to learn. You’ll operate the right way, gain knowledge, be safe, and everybody goes home at the end of the day.”
He said though he considered using the scholarship for himself to gain instruction in non-destructive testing, he decided instead to help someone coming up through the ranks. “I will donate to someone who needs certification and can’t afford it,” he explained.
Considering the list of past Top Trainer winners, Dutton said he’s humbled to stand among them. “I’m honored to be chosen as one of the Top Trainers. A lot of sharp individuals have won this award, and it was definitely a surprise in that regard.”
Because of the valuable instruction he’s gained from talented trainers over the years, Dutton said it only makes sense to give back with his scholarship. “I will donate it so somebody coming into the business,” he said, adding, “I’ve been fortunate in my career to have good mentors and opportunities to learn from the best, and I think it’s important to bring people in to the profession and give them the same opportunities I was afforded.”
