Wolffkran has supplied 44 cranes for the construction of 1,000,000 sq m of accommodation for pilgrims to the Islamic holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
Just a few days ago the Department of Energy announced a ten-year plan to make wind and solar power as cheap as fossil fuels, and at least one top player in the future energy field is off to a roaring start. That would be GE. The company has just completed acquisition of a next-generation technology that lowers the cost of installing wind turbine towers, resulting in an overall savings of up to 12%.
Looking at the design, I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s a large concrete footing on top of four concrete pillars. At first my thought was that that they were trying to make it easier to finish the building at the end of the job. Normally you would pull the tower sections out, then go back and fill in the 3×3 meter holes in the floors that allowed the crane through. But if you had four concrete pillars close together like that, what could you put in that area of the building?

The following example of make-do access equipment was spotted by a reader in Salies de Bearn, South West France. It certainly qualifies among the top candidates for the craziest platforms ever built. Rather than organise a relatively small aerial lift or a proper mobile tower our man has used a stack of pallets plus a small work scaffold that he probably owns and placed it all on the forks of a lift truck.
On November 8, 2010, OSHA’s update to the Cranes & Derricks standard (1926.400) went into effect. Although some of the provisions have delayed effective dates ranging from one year to four, there are a few important updates that were effective on November 8th.
A strong risk assessment and planning, combined with a sharp operator saved a big crawler from tipping over. The crane, a 1,200 tonne Liebherr LTR11200 telescopic belonging to Karl Hartinger Kranbetrieb of Rimbeck-Warburg in Germany, was working on new wind farm being erected on moorland with a peat bog substrate.
