A reader in has Northern Ireland reported a near miss with a self-erecting tower crane earlier this week. The crane’s jib buckled and fell but was retained by its hoist cables. We do not know much about what happened, but we do know that it was on a site in Downpatrick.

What Thanksgiving is really all about is giving thanks; or better said, saying thanks. How do you say thanks? Go into any retail store and most of the time (not all the time) some clerk will say, “Thanks and have a nice day.”

Ezra Holdings, the Singapore based marine services and support provider to the offshore oil & gas sector, says it has acquired a 60,000 Square Metres (650,000 sqft) fabrication facility in Houston, Texas at “distressed prices”. Ezra says the facility will allow it to fabricate customised cranes for modern offshore Oil & Gas vessels.

I got an unsolicited email this morning that gave me no choice but to read it. My interest had to do with the subject line, the headline, the design of the content, and the copy.

When I have more money than I need (which these days seems farther away than it did a few years ago), I want to travel around the world and speak to high school freshmen and sophomores. A New York state judge has ordered New York City to reinstate the crane operator license of man with alleged ties to the Mafia. Judge Alice Schlesinger said that a rule that crane operators must be of “good moral character” in order to have their licenses renewed, was unfair and ordered the city to reinstate the license of Louis Inglese.

They demand attention, these marvels of machinery. Below, a thousand workers might weld steel, lay bricks and juggle a thousand other jobs, but the eye strays up to the cranes. Specifically, these are tower cranes, inverted L-shaped behemoths that are helping to build Parkview Regional Medical Center and add a fifth floor to Lutheran Hospital.

Crane operators in British Columbia must have a valid operator’s certificate by February 28, 2011. Any operator not certified by February 28 cannot legally operate a crane in British Columbia. There are still many operators who have not been assessed and time and resources are limited.

Salespeople wanna make sales – and for the most part feel alone in the process. One of the challenges all salespeople face is: What’s the best way?
