Morrow Introduces Liebherr’s 200 DR 5/10

morrow-liebherr-200-dr-5-10Liebherr’s derrick crane, the 200 DR 5/10 has been introduced to the North American market by Morrow Equipment. Morrow leased the derrick to Seattle-based Sellen Construction to dismantle a Liebherr 355 HC-L luffing tower crane. Once the crane was out of the way, the derrick picked and placed the remaining structural steel, HVAC equipment and roofing materials.

“The Liebherr derrick had the right combination of small footprint and lift capacity,” said Scott Amick, Sellen’s senior project engineer.

The Liebherr 200 DR 5/10 has an 82-foot (25 m) reach, 22,000-pound (10 tonne) lift capacity and comes with frequency-controlled, stepless drives for slewing, luffing and hoisting. A PLC control system monitors movements and the derrick also has sensors that monitor lifting height, load moment, boom angle and the swing gear.

I went down to see this Derrick. It’s a very nice set up. The heaviest piece is the turntable at 4000 lbs or so. The boom sections are around 300 lbs each, making the derrick very manageable but still capable of good picking capacities. The outriggers have multiple offsets that they can be set to for various applications. Additionally it can be swung 180 degrees without any modifications unlike many older derricks.

Operations are smooth and the operator reported enjoying running it.

Morrow got the crane just this year and already has many jobs looking to use it. Seattle is a town that has always avoided using derricks due to the complexity of moving them into place, building reinforcement, etc. We have many cranes with good reach because of that problem. Now that we have a reasonable Derrick available, we might see them used more in a ever growing city.

Nice Article. I didn’t even think about it.
