HSE warns of cranes in high cycle applications

The CPA has sent a letter from the Heath and Safety Executive to its members highlighting potential problems of using cranes in high cycle applications, following an incident in Aberdeen when the boom snapped on a mobile crane. The incident in Aberdeen harbour was recently investigated by the HSE and involved a conventional 100 tonne mobile crane being used for loading supply vessels.

A crane hire company has been fined after the hook broke off a tower crane and its four tonne load crashed 36 metres to the ground, narrowly missing a footpath.

The US Crane & Derricks in Construction Final Rule standards have been released and will be published in the Federal Register on August 9th 90 days later an up to four year transition period begins before all sections effectively become law.

CCAA and NCCCO, develop crane inspector certification

The Crane Certification Association of America (CCAA) and the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) announced plans to develop cooperatively a certification program for crane inspectors, also known as “crane certifiers” or “crane surveyors.”
